17th Century Renovation Apartment in Lisbon
Transform a space of a convent of the sec. XVII in a contemporary and modern apartment - This was the spirit that motivated us in this project. In our favour, we had all the tradition and character of Alfama's Lisbon, with its narrow and winding alleys lulled by the sound of popular Fado. And that was how, next to an old church, on Rua Jardim do Tabaco, we found our challenge. We were immediately surprised by the proximity of the river and the consequent light.
Betting on a total remodelling, with first quality materials, we sought a fusion between the comfort and functionality of a modern apartment, with the elegance and tradition of tiles from the 17th and 18th centuries, the window portals and doors in solid wood and also the door frames in marble.
Initially, the floor plant had small divisions and cramped environments; we chose to make the space feasible by transforming it into a one-bedroom apartment, more open and more fluid.
In this intervention, and to improve habitability, double-glazed oscillating windows, levelling the floor and ceilings with acoustic and thermal insulation and recovery of the walls, with insulation from the action of saltpetre, were included.
In the kitchen, we used contemporary and bright materials, with the Bisazza glass insert, white oak and aluminium, and we tried to create conditions a lot of neatness and functionality.
In the Suite, inspired by the latest trends, where the bedroom is the point of harmony with our inner being, we tried to recreate a mini spa, where the bathroom was the protagonist. With a relaxing environment where the bathtub plays a prominent role, it is coated with Bisazza glass tile and punctuated by tiles from the 18th century.
Also considering more practical aspects of the Suite, in addition to the extensive wardrobe, we have introduced, in the personal hygiene area, a shower cabin and, for greater privacy, a frosted glass cabin for the toilet. The washbasin, with modern lines, is suspended in a bronzed oak cabinet and all the dishes and taps are signed, respectively, by Designers Antonio Citterio and Philippe Starck. In the living room, the social toilet, covered in Gold Schist, has a glass and stainless steel countertop. Of note is the guest toilet and the tap, signed by the designers already mentioned.
